Data Use Policies

Data Use Notice

This page provides information about how UCI Spark collects, uses, and protects student data.

What data is UCI Spark using?

UCI Spark uses data from the Canvas Learning Management System and other institutional data. If you would like more information about the collection and use of online course data, please contact the Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning at (949) 824-7761.

How is the data being used?

UCI Spark uses anonymized aggregate data to display course activity analytics and to recommend campus services ("sparks") to an individual.

What data is UCI Spark collecting? How is it stored/used?

UCI Spark collects user-entered information and logging information (e.g. page visits). The data is stored securely and used by UCI Spark to make calculations in order to recommend tailored sparks to an individual. The data may also be used for service support (e.g. to monitor service performance, provide end-user support), internal planning and reporting (e.g. to analyze aggregate data and identify and respond to trends), and research (aggregated data sets for academic purposes, subject to IRB approval as needed).

What data can researchers get access to?

Researchers can request data access or extracts via the Student Data Governance process.
